Introduction to Breast Augmentation

According to the National Library of Medicine, since 1997 alone, breast augmentations have become so popularized that there has been a 206.8% increase in annual procedures.1

Choosing breast augmentation isn’t usually about wanting to look like someone else; it’s about wanting to feel comfortable in your own skin again. For some patients, it’s about restoring volume lost after pregnancy or due to weight changes. For others, it’s finally addressing long-standing asymmetry or proportions that never felt quite right.

At Align Aesthetic Center in Boca Raton, Dr. Jonathan Cook approaches breast augmentation as a highly personal experience, and never a cookie-cutter operation. His goal isn’t simply to add volume. It’s to help each patient feel confident, balanced, and at home in their body.

Dr. Cook believes beautiful results begin with listening. Every surgical plan is built around your anatomy, your lifestyle, and how you want to feel when you look in the mirror.

What is a Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that enhances breast size, shape, and symmetry using implants or fat transfer. While the technical goal is volume, the emotional goal is harmony, bringing your chest into better balance with the rest of your body.

For many patients, augmentation restores fullness that has faded over time. For others, it creates curves that are never fully developed. Regardless of the reason, Dr. Cook focuses on natural-looking results that move with your body and fit your frame.

Mini breast augmentation is for patients interested in a subtle enhancement rather than a dramatic increase in volume. This approach typically uses smaller implants and focuses on gentle contouring, ideal for patients seeking a better fit in clothing or to restore mild volume loss without appearing “augmented.”

It’s often chosen by athletic or petite patients who prefer a refined, understated change.

Who Are the Best Candidates for a Breast Augmentation?

You may be a strong candidate if you are healthy and maintain a stable weight, feel dissatisfied with breast size or shape, have realistic expectations, want to restore volume lost over time, or desire improved symmetry.

Dr. Cook evaluates skin quality, chest anatomy, lifestyle, and personal goals to ensure augmentation is both safe and satisfying.

What Are the Benefits of a Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation offers both physical and emotional benefits. Patients often experience enhanced breast volume and shape, improved body proportions, correction of asymmetry, and restored fullness after pregnancy or weight loss. Many also notice a better fit in clothing and swimwear, along with increased confidence and self-image.

Many patients describe feeling more “balanced” afterward, not just physically, but emotionally.

Steps of Selecting Your Implants

Choosing implants is one of the most important (and most personal) parts of breast augmentation. Dr. Cook walks you through each decision carefully:

Type of Implant

Choosing implants is one of the most important and most personal parts of breast augmentation. Dr. Cook walks you through each decision carefully:

Type of Implant

Patients choose between saline and silicone implants. Silicone implants are popular for their natural feel, while saline implants offer adjustability and smaller incisions. Each has advantages, and Dr. Cook helps determine which suits your body best.

Implant Size

Size selection isn’t about cup letters; it’s about proportions. Dr. Cook considers your frame, chest width, existing tissue, and lifestyle to recommend volume that complements your body rather than overwhelms it. Try-on sizing helps patients visualize outcomes in real time.

Implant Shape

Round implants offer fullness throughout the breast, while anatomical (teardrop) implants provide a more gradual slope. Shape choice influences cleavage, projection, and overall silhouette.

Implant Placement

Implants may be placed above or below the chest muscle, depending on anatomy and desired look. A study by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons found that between 2005 and 2020, the percentage of inframammary incisions (under the breast fold) increased significantly from 68% to 80%, while the percentage of peri-areolar incisions (around the nipple area) decreased.2 While this gives some insight into their popularity, Dr. Cook can explain the pros and cons of each during your consultation.

Incision Placement

Incisions are placed in the breast fold, around the areola, or occasionally in the armpit. Dr. Cook chooses placement strategically to minimize visible scarring.

What to Expect on the Day of Breast Augmentation Surgery

After check-in at a Boca Raton surgical center, you’ll meet with Dr. Cook to review your surgical plan one final time. This is when implant size and placement are confirmed, surgical markings are made, and any last-minute questions are answered.

You’ll then be guided into surgery, where anesthesia is administered. Once you’re fully asleep, Dr. Cook performs your augmentation using the agreed-upon technique. The procedure lasts one to two hours.

After surgery, you’ll wake up in recovery wearing a supportive surgical bra. Most patients feel groggy but comfortable, and nursing staff monitors them closely as the anesthesia wears off.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

Your Guide to Post-Breast Augmentation Care

The first few days may include chest tightness, swelling, and soreness, especially with movement. This is most noticeable in the upper chest and gradually improves. Prescription medication is usually provided for comfort during this initial phase, followed by over-the-counter options as healing progresses.

Most patients feel well enough to walk around the house the same day and return to desk-based work within several days to a week. Early movement is encouraged to promote circulation, but lifting, overhead reaching, and strenuous activity are restricted for several weeks.

Swelling peaks during the first week and slowly subsides over the following months. During this time, implants begin to settle and soften, a natural process often called “drop and fluff,” where they assume a more natural position.

Full results continue to refine for up to 3 months, sometimes longer, as tissues relax and scars mature.

  • Can I give more stars than 5? This doctor certainly deserves it! I had an injury which led me to the ER. Immediately it was obvious that a plastic surgeon would need to be called in. A good friend recommended Dr. Cook and I couldn’t be happier with her suggestion. Not only is he a FANTASTIC doctor but he’s a pretty amazing person as well. His demeanor alleviated all of my stress from the traumatic event. He brought levity to the ER and immediately made me feel at ease. Months later, he is still checking in, tweaking the scar with lasers and still his kind, impressive self.

  • I couldn’t be more pleased than I am with Dr. Cook and his staff. He does amazing work! I’ve had my eyelid done by him and he’s a perfectionist. He’s incredibly thorough, asks a lot of questions and actually listens to what you’re saying. He’s honest and will tell you if you’re not a good candidate for something, which I feel is a trait missing with most Plastic Surgeons. He’s a true professional and a really nice guy. Has a good sense of humor too. I would recommend Dr. Cook above all other Plastic Surgeons. There is a lot to choose from, but I feel he’s the best. You won’t be disappointed!

  • Dr. Jonathan Cook is the best plastic surgeon and I would refer him to everyone! His exceptional surgery skills and his attentive and professional service are 5 star! I had skin cancer on my neck and chest and I am very relieved and happy with the outcome.

  • I came to Dr. Cook when the mohs surgeon who was going to remove basal cell on my nostril said a plastic surgeon would have to close the area. After having a consult with him, the surgery was set up by his assistant, Lauren. After the mohs surgery, I went directly to Dr. Cook who had to do a skin graft to close up the whole that was left. The area where the graft was taken has no scarring, and the graft took completely. He is doing laser to eliminate scarring on the nose area. I cannot speak highly enough about this team. The caring, consideration and most of all expertise and preciseness was superb, and I am so grateful to Dr. Cook for all of it.
