What is PRP Therapy?
PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is a growth–factor–based treatment for hair loss that falls under the umbrella of regenerative medicine, which also includes stem cell therapy. There are three potential sources for growth factors:
- Synthetic: Currently a proprietary product administered with an ultrasound device.
- Exogenous: Generally delivered as exosomes — intercellular communication structures obtained from bone marrow or placenta — but this category also includes plant-based and other types of exogenous growth factors.
- Endogenous: Obtained from the patient’s own blood. The best-known endogenous source is PRP, which is the focus of this page.
Platelets are blood cell fragments critical to normal blood clotting that contain several growth factors — proteins that signal the body to generate specific tissues, such as blood vessels and skin, after injury, among many other functions. With PRP, blood is centrifuged to separate its layers, including red blood cells, plasma, and a buffy coat that concentrates platelets. This concentrated layer, separated from the others and containing a small amount of plasma, is termed platelet-rich plasma, where the growth factors reside.
Because platelet counts vary widely (150–450 per mcl), some PRP samples will have higher growth factor levels than others, which may explain the inconsistent results sometimes observed with this therapy.
At Align Aesthetic Center in Boca Raton, our practitioners inject PRP superficially into the scalp in areas of hair loss to promote thicker, darker, healthier, and more cosmetically effective hair growth.
